Account of Graves recently discovered at Hartlaw, on the farm of Westruther Mains, with Drawings by Lady John Scott
Graves, Human remains, Cairns, Female Antiquarians
Hartlaw, Westruther Mains, Scottish Borders, Scotland, UK
Two knolls were excavated under the supervision of Lady John Scott. Both contained graves – one contained fourteen and the other two – as well as stone foundations. The author compares the graves to those found at another site excavated by Lady John Scott (see Volume 5, pp. 222-224). He speculates that the graves at Hartlaw could be from the transition period between pre-Christian and early Christian burial practices. A note written by Lady John Scott and a site plan she produced are included with the paper.
