Abstract

Having established in his earlier papers that the area around Newstead was a site of a major Roman occupation, Dr. Smith tries to understand the rough period of that occupation from the evidence provided by coins found in the Red Abbeystead and surrounding fields. Though conceding that the dating cannot be exact, as coins could be circulated long after their minting, he finds that the greatest concentration of coins is in the reign of Antoninus Pius and concludes that this was probably the stablest period in the era of Roman control of the area.
