Roman Antiquities found at Newstead, Roxburghshire

Abstract

Dr. John Alex Smith presented several papers on the subject of Roman presence in the vicinity of the Eildon Hills, which had years earlier been posited by General Roy to be the site of Trimontium. His arguments for agreeing with the general in the first place go back to an examination of Ptolemy's map of Britain, but then he brings in evidence that had accumulated in the fields outside of nearby Newstead, where many remains of Roman occupation had turned up since 1780. Especially important are two altar stones, which are figured in the engraved plate that accompanies the article. The article ends with an introduction to a third paper which forms the next article in the journal.
