Abstract


George Vere Irving’s translation of a passage describing how Walter of Constance disguised himself as a Scottish pilgrim so that he could travel to Rome to meet with Pope Alexander in the twelfth century. Also included is analysis of how Irving translated certain terms in the text and what these might tell us about Scottish travellers – or English perceptions of them – in this century.
