Abstract

Widespread public concern about the weathering of the Dupplin Cross resulted in its removal from its site in the parklands of Dupplin Castle to a sheltered environment at St Serf’s Church, Dunning. An archaeological investigation of the immediate environment of the cross was carried out as part of this operation. This paper describes the cross and its context in the royal and ecclesiastical milieu of the ninth century. Cartographic evidence shows that the cross was in its present location from the late 17th century; its survival is traced in the context of a developing post-medieval designed landscape.
