Abstract

This paper analyses reindeer antlers dug out of peat on the island of Rousay, Orkney. They comprise of one pair of antlers attached to the frontal bones of the skull, and a single antler, larger than any previously recorded from Scotland. As another large reindeer antler of Scottish origin was uncovered on Rousay, Platt argues large and strong reindeer existed on Orkney in prehistoric times. Platt discusses the history of reindeer, their record in Scotland, and the designation of the kind of reindeer. Subsequently, Platt describes the antler’s, their measurements, and artificial markings, complete with illustrations.
