Abstract

This paper comments on the meaning of the name ‘Maes Howe’. Author argues that the ‘Howe’ part is Norse and the ‘Maes’ part is from the Orkney islands original inhabitants. The majority of the article re-evaluates some of the runic inscriptions from Maeshowe, through the lens of the author’s study of the Anglo-Saxon language and Latin.
