Abstract

The author attempts to prove that the inscribed stone described in his previous paper (see Vol II, pp.484-489) also features in a sketch made for Sir Walter Scott in the early 1800s. A note from Scott suggested that the sketch is of a different stone monument found in the same area. However, the author argues that Scott misremembered that the inscribed stone and the stone in the sketch were the same. This argument was confirmed by Reverend James Russell, who was close to Scott and knew of only one stone monument discovered at Yarrow. The article concludes by discussing what the inscription on the stone might read.
