Abstract

John Richardson tries to reconcile the two theories about the location of John Knox's birth: Gifford, the village, or Giffordgate, the suburb or Haddington. He presents the histories of both areas during Knox's lifetime. THe paper concludes that the village was not known as Gifford at the time and a supplementary notice also concludes that Knox was born in Haddington based on Knox's work as a notary.
