Abstract

The items on display were miniature examples of Buddhist shrines unearthed in Sri Lanka. The native people of the region could not provide an explanation for why these items were buried and in some cases burned. It is suggested that they may have been used as currency, as votive offerings or that they may have been brought back from pilgrimages.
