Abstract

Gordon Maxwell was not just a Roman archae­ologist of distinction, but a pioneer in the devel­opment of aerial reconnaissance for archaeology in Scotland, his aerial revelations transforming the understanding of our Lowland archaeologi­cal heritage. His discoveries of Roman forts in the early 1980s even prompted a cartoon in The Times, the original proudly displayed on the wall of his study at home in Aberdour.
